Over a third (35%) of 16-29 year olds claim they expect more variation in their day to day career
Almost a third (32%) of 16-29 year olds have roles in the casual job sector eg retail and hospitality

Young Brits insist there’s no such thing as a “job for life” in this day and age according to a new study by JOB TODAY, the number one hiring app in the UK. Researchers polled 2,000 people and discovered the average 16-29 year old expects to be in his or her current job for just four and a half months.

In fact, the average 16-29 year expects to have six jobs in his or her lifetime, gone are the days of a job for life enjoyed by their parents and grandparents. Many put this down to the changing job climate with 35% of 16-29 years olds saying they expect more variation in their day to day career explaining why 16% of 16-29 years old have more than one job compared to 86% of 30-44 years who have just one job.

According to the data, 63% of all adult Brits say they will spend less time in one job than their parents, with 16-29 year olds topping the list spending the least time in comparison. Half (50%) of all working Brits put this down to more flexibility in the job market. Those in Bristol and Plymouth came out the lowest with the average adult expecting to spend just one month in a job compared to Londoners who expect to spend five months. In fact, 39% of Bristolians say they want casual jobs that fit in with their lifestyle explaining why they have topped the list.

Founder of JOB TODAY, Polina Montano said, “We are seeing the demand for casual jobs soar and that’s why JOB TODAY is so popular amongst young workers – we are providing them with jobs in a matter of hours which is exactly what they want. Gone are the days of staying in a role for life, job seekers now want jobs that fit in and around their day to day lives so employers need to adapt and cater for this new job climate.”

Traditional jobs for life such as medicine and teaching are being taken over by casual jobs. Just 8% of 16-29 year olds work in the medical profession and 3% in teaching whilst 32% work in the casual jobs industry, eg waitressing/retail work with 16% of 16-29 year olds having more than one job.

The casual job sector is a booming industry with JOB TODAY securing casual jobs for seekers within 24 hours. The app connects young job seekers with casual jobs which are available at local businesses. This therefore allows job seekers to secure jobs through an app for the first time. This is the ultimate flexible working situation where JOB TODAY is helping young Brits manage the evolving, fast-paced job climate.
